CHSA celebrates America's 250th by producing "Lion Dance Across America"More than 30 lion dance teams across the United States have committed to performing in their local Independence Day parades as part of the celebration of America’s 250th anniversary. Lion dance, a vibrant Asian cultural tradition, is now practiced in 43 states. Asian Americans have participated in July 4th celebrations for more than 170 years, with documented appearances in San Francisco as early as 1852, in Deadwood, South Dakota in 1888, and in New York City in 1911, reflecting a long history of civic engagement and patriotism across the nation. This year, lion dance teams will perform in some of America’s most historic Independence Day celebrations. A team will participate in the Bristol, Rhode Island parade, the nation’s oldest continuous Fourth of July parade, dating back to 1785. Another team will continue a tradition established in Deadwood, South Dakota in 1888. In Philadelphia, a team has specially imported a dragon and several lions featuring Stars and Stripes-inspired designs to honor the nation’s semiquincentennial.
