On Friday, July 4th, the Wallingford Historical Society invites you to come to the 62nd annual bell ringing at the Samuel Parsons House at 180 South Main Street, Wallingford to celebrate our independence from the British Empire. In 1963, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed July 4th to be National Bell Ringing Day, and encouraged everyone to ring a bell for freedom. The Historical Society did not have a bell until we acquired the old Town Hall Bell in October 1963. Beginning on July 4, 1964, we started our tradition of ringing that bell, and, in the late 1990s, added the ringing of our school bells from Whittelsey Avenue School, Colony Street School and Washington Street School, thanks to an Eagle Scout project that moved them and set them up to be rung.
You are invited to join us on the rear lawn of the Parsons House any time after 12 Noon for a "Bring-Your-Own" picnic lunch and chair. That will be followed at 1:35PM with the reading of Governor Lamont's July 4th Proclamation, a brief talk about one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Nelson, Jr. of Virginia, followed by the playing of the Star Spangled Banner.
At 2:00PM, we shall be joining many others around our great country by ringing the old, one-ton Town Hall Bell for two minutes, followed by the ringing of our three school bells.
Please join us for this FREE event.
