SUMMER MOVIE NIGHTS FEATURED PRESENTATIONS
JUNE 27
Independence Day
PG-13;144 mins
On July 2nd, communications systems worldwide are sent into chaos by a strange atmospheric interference. First thought to be meteors, they are later revealed to be gigantic spacecraft, piloted by a mysterious alien species who have set out to launch an attack throughout the globe. On July 3rd, the aliens all but obliterate New York, Los Angeles, and Washington when a band of survivors devise a plan to fight back against the enslaving aliens. On July 4th, humanity fights for its freedom.
Directed by Roland Emmerich. Starring Will Smith, Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Mary McDonnell
JULY 25
Napoleon Dynamite
PG; 86 mins
From the rural town of Preston, Idaho, comes Napoleon Dynamite (Jon Heder). With a red 'fro, his moon boots, and illegal government ninja moves, he is a new kind of hero. His family consists of fragile brother Kip (Aaron Ruell), who's seeking his soulmate in online chat rooms; Uncle Rico (Jon Gries), who is stuck in his "glory" days of high school football; and Grandma (Sandy Martin), who enjoys going out to the dunes on her quad-runner. Napoleon spends his days drawing magical beasts, working on his computer hacking skills to impress the chicks, and begrudgingly feeding his Grandma's pet llama. When his friend Pedro (Efren Ramirez) decides to run for class president, it is Napoleon to the rescue to help him triumph over adversity.
Directed by Jared Hess. Starring Jon Heder, Efren Ramirez, Jon Gries, Aaron Ruell, Tina Majorino, Haylie Duff
AUGUST 22
Date Night
PG-13; 87 mins
Worried that the spark has gone from their marriage, Phil and Claire Foster plan a romantic night out at a hip Manhattan eatery. When they arrive, however, the restaurant is heaving, and, without a reservation, Phil impulsively claims they are absent diners the Tripplehorns. The ploy seems to have worked, until two heavies interrupt their meal demanding the return of a stolen flash drive.
Directed by Shawn Levy. Starring Steve Carell, Tina Fey, Mark Wahlberg, Taraji P. Henson
SEPTEMBER 26
Edward Scissorhands
PG-13; 105 mins
A scientist (Vincent Price) builds an animated human being -- the gentle Edward (Johnny Depp). The scientist dies before he can finish assembling Edward, though, leaving the young man with a freakish appearance accentuated by the scissor blades he has instead of hands. Loving suburban saleswoman Peg (Dianne Wiest) discovers Edward and takes him home, where he falls for Peg's teen daughter (Winona Ryder). However, despite his kindness and artistic talent, Edward's hands make him an outcast.
Directed by Tim Burton. Starring Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, Dianne Wiest, Anthony Michael Hall, Kathy Baker, Vincent Price, Alan Arkin
