A children’s book club. This month to celebrate July 4th we are reading Our Flag Was Still There, written & illustrated by Jessie Hartland.About this Event
Join us June 7th from 10am-11am or 1pm-2pm in the Visitor & Education Center at Fort Monroe for Rampart Readers, a children’s book club partnership between Fort Monroe Authority and Hampton Public Library.
This month in celebration of Independence Day we are reading Our Flag Was Still There, The True Story of Mary Pickersgill and the Star-Spangled Banner written and illustrated by Jessie Hartland. This story stars a major on the eve of battle, a seamstress and her mighty helpers, and a poet named Francis Scott Key. This isn’t just the story of one flag. It’s the story of “The Star Spangled-Banner,” a poem that became our national anthem, too. Stick around after to create your own celebratory flag!
