At the same time, we gather today as citizens of a kingdom that knows no borders. As followers of Jesus Christ, our deepest identity is not found in any nation, party, or ideology, but in the One who calls all people to himself. We honor our country best when we seek God's will above our own and work for the well-being of all our neighbors.
On Saturday, July 4, Ascension will join other downtown churches by ringing our bells at noon. Captain Butlers Retreat Center will be open if you would like to have a picnic lunch.
At worship on Sunday, July 5 at 10:00 am, the music reflects several strands of the American story. You will hear songs from our national heritage, music that celebrates a distinct American identity and spirit, and music that gives voice to the struggles, sorrows, and hopes that have shaped our common life. Together, these songs remind us that gratitude and honesty belong side by side, and that every generation is called anew to pursue liberty and justice for all.
In the Gospel, Jesus extends a gracious invitation: "Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest." In a world often marked by division, anxiety, and striving, Christ calls us to lay down our burdens and receive the peace that only he can give.
Let us give thanks for the blessings we enjoy, pray for our nation and all the nations of the earth, and place our trust in the Lord of all peoples, whose mercy endures forever.
